Blind Faith Fuel Altereds

About Us

History as we fuzzily remember it…

1970 – Ed and Jack Maroney ran a 148” front engine dragster. The car was campaigned as a team car to Fred Rathbun and Jerry Forbes. These cars were known as the “Merrymen of Arizona”. The car had a four cylinder Pontiac with a 4.71 blower on 30% Nitro. A Model B ford 3 speed with a Lakewood can transferred power to an Olds rear. The car ran in the 9-second range while using the clutch to shift. One of the last races in this car was Comp Eliminator at the 1972 AHRA Winternationals, Beeline Dragway in Phoenix.

1971 – The brothers bought a 242” FED and had it shorted to 180”. The car utilized a Carbureted Small block Chevy on gas with a 350 turbo and an Olds rear. The car never ran real great, and while trying to figure it out turned to Mike Day for help. Mike at the time was teamed with Tom Stits and was winning races with their injected nitro small block in a fiat altered. This car carried the “Blind Faith” name. The front of the altered had a painting portraying an upright mouse on roller skates. The mouse had on sunglasses and was holding a blind mans cane.

1973 – The brothers teamed with Mike Day and built a Vega Panel wagon funny car. The car was lettered with Maroney Bros. and Day, and Blind Faith on the front spoiler. The body was out of the same mold that Don Schumacher campaigned as the Wonder Bread car. This car had the drive train from Mike’s Fiat. A 326 cu in Small block Chevy, injected on 95% Nitro. A Crower Glide, 2-speed Lenco and 9” rear got the power down. The car was very lightweight at 1400 lbs wet. 110” wheelbase with a torsion front end made the car fun to drive. The team held the AHRA record in B/FA with this combination.

1975 – A ’23 T Altered body was mounted on the car. With an injected SBC, the car qualified number 16 with an 8.06 at the Fuel Altered Nationals in Tucson Arizona. Ed Moore’s Mob finished them off in the first round of eliminations.

1976 – The same 110” car was outfitted with a blown steel big block Chevy.

1980 – The team bought a new 125” Ken Cox Funny car with an ’80 Dodge Challenger and a ’23 T Altered body. The drive train from the Vega was upgraded with a 481 Rodeck. The Maroney Bros. and Day name on the car was replaced with “Blind Faith”. This car was run from 1980-1984, mostly match racing as a Fuel Altered.

1984 – The chassis was fitted with a new Corvette body. With the drive train being all Chevrolet and new Corvette body, the name was changed to “Chevy Show”.

1986 – Match raced in Las Vegas as a Fuel Altered. This was the last race for the team.

From these two brothers, the Maroney Family has continued the racing tradition. Currently the family has 10 drag cars that range from Super Street, Super Comp, Top Dragster, Nostalgia Funny Car and Top Alcohol.
